ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The application will be open from Friday, January 2, 2026 at 12:00AM EST through Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 11:59PM EST. Scholars will be able to choose one of three scholarships from which to apply. Each scholarship has a specific core value that must be met. Full details are available via the application link below. Selections will be made by Wednesday, April 15, 2026. For questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Valerie Robinson at communityoutreach@umessmac.org.

Must submit a 2-minute video essay explaining how you would contribute to HBCU culture at UMES through leadership and how UMES can best assist you in your future endeavors.

Must be attending UMES as a freshman for the Fall 2025-2026 academic year.

Must have a 2.5 unweighted G.P.A.

Must commit to UMES by May 1, 2026.

Must be a resident of Southern Prince George's County, Maryland, Charles County, Maryland, Calvert County, Maryland, or St. Mary's County, Maryland.

SCHOLARSHIP ONE: The Deborah Wilson Taylor Scholarship for Education honors the legacy of a founding member of the UMES Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, Inc. whose unwavering commitment to education, community service, and the mission of UMES left a lasting impact on all who knew her. This scholarship is dedicated to supporting students pursuing careers in education, reflecting Ms. Taylor’s lifelong passion for learning, mentorship, and service. Through this award, her dedication to shaping future generations continues to live on. SCHOLARSHIP TWO: The Cecelia Spinks Scholarship for Service recognizes students who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to service and community engagement. This scholarship reflects the values exemplified by Cecelia Spinks as a founding member, public servant, and devoted alumna. Recipients of this award embody her spirit of selflessness, leadership, and dedication to uplifting others. SCHOLARSHIP THREE: The Latina Wilson Scholarship for Leadership honors a founding member whose vision, dedication, and leadership have had a profound impact on the chapter and broader community. This scholarship is awarded to students who exemplify outstanding leadership, integrity, and commitment to service—qualities that Ms. Wilson has consistently demonstrated throughout her life and work.
